Hiya Ann,

Thanks, but I think the birth is a bit early..... do u mean this is a relative or father?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 4 Jan 2010 15:06

not a clue and I realise it's too early but it seems rather a coincidence donlt you think?

I shall have a look into that.....
Ive only just started on the Collins and I have a suspicion that his name was JOHN Edward Collins, but most the records are as Edward.

Thanks Ann...I shall have a look into that :-) x

Hi Erika,
I have had a look back to 1891 which gives Edward Collins as born in St. Helana which I think should be St. Helena, making him a French citizen.

Hi there, for what it's worth I would of thought that "Foreign Subject" - would mean he was not born in England and "France" would relate to his country of origin.
My surname is Colin and my husband is French so even though it may not look very french it is possibly a french name.

If his marriage cert. gives Joseph as father's name, then this could be him in 1861 ?

This would be the 1891 census

Edward Collins abt 1852 St Heland Head Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Anna Collins abt 1868 Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Wife Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Ethel Collins abt 1868 Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Daughter Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
James Collins abt 1885 Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Son Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Amelia Collins abt 1887 Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Daughter Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

Living 10 Pleasant Place.

Ethel's age is given as 2 1/2yrs so date of birth would be 1888 not 1868.

Also interesting to note that Edward is noted as being deaf and dumb.

1911 census may throw some light on his place of birth, but you will have to pay to view:-

HOUSEHOLD COLLINS ALICE F 1901 10 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS ARTHUR M 1908 3 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS BERTIE M 1893 18 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS EDITH F 1896 15 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS EDWARD M 1853 58 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS ELIZABETH F 1894 17 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS LOUISA F 1899 12 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS MAY F 1904 7 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS ROSE F 1898 13 Yarmouth Norfolk
HOUSEHOLD COLLINS HANNAH F 1868 43 Yarmouth Norfolk

EDIT:-
When I put France for place of birth for Edward:-
First names EDWARD
First names Algorithm Exact
Last names COLLINS
Last names Algorithm Exact
Birth Year 1853
Birth Year +/- 1 years
Birth Place FRANCE
County Norfolk
Residence YARMOUTH
it showed same result as 1911 census.

1901 was before the days of British citizenship, people were British subjects.

Census enumerators would then just refer to the citizen of a foreign country as a "foreign subject" even though France and the US, for instance, were republics with no monarch and so their citizens were not "subjects".

It's quite simple, it means he was born a citizen of a foreign country, France, and is still a citizen of that country living in England.

If someone was a British subject born abroad (the child of a British subject father), it would say something like "France, British subject".

If they were born a citizen of another country born abroad and then became "citizens" of the UK later, it would say "France, naturalized British subject" (or BS).

--- I should add that just because the census says this (or anything else!) doesn't mean it was correct. If he was born in Guernsey for example the enumerator may have thought that meant he was a French citizen.
