I am trying to date James Collins death. James was born in 1844 son of George Collins in London and married Emily Hartley b 1844 on 21.08.1862. I know that he was a sailor (his son James Harltey Collins was educated at a mariners school for children of deceased sailors) but I am not sure if he died at sea. Can anyone help with the death date and/or suggestions as to where I can find more information about his sea career.
Many thanks
Alison

The 1851 census identifies George (father) and James .
I am not sure at what age he attended the school which I believe was in East London.

There are a couple of possibilities if you search here (if he was in Royal Navy rather than Merchant Navy)

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/royal-navy-service.asp

It will cost you £3-50 to download each service record.
