Whilst doing your search for ancestors, you may get to a point where this surname disappears, as Collins simply means the son of Collin. And Colin is itself a medieval abbreviation of Col, short for Nicholas. Famous Collins include the Irish nationalist Michael (1890-1922), the inventor of the murder mystery novel Wilkie (William 1824-1889), and the fictional character William, who appeared in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I mention the latter because it established a ‘Collins’ as a Victorian letter of thanks to a host for their hospitality.
