I am searching for the family of Mary Ann Woodall (nee Cook) who in 1891 according to the census was living with her husband George Woodall and their two children George ( 11 months) and Ethel (9 years). In 1900 Mary Ann died. The marriage of Mary Ann and George is a mystery to me since I can find no record, so they may not have been married at all, although on all documents that I have she is listed as Woodall. Finding the marriage of my two grandparents will enable me to delve further back into my heritage but it is proving to be a stumbling block right now. If you can be of help I would appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I do not have a birth certifcate for Mary Ann Cook - it is such a common name. I do have a birth certificate for George, my father, and his mother's name is given as Mary Ann Woodall (formerly Cook) so I feel pretty sure that they were married. On her death certificate too her name is given as Woodall.A sister (in the 1891 census) for my father came as a surprise and I hoped to find something from applying for birth certificates for the two Ethels born in 1882, but neither one fitted with the parents' names.

I am trying to work back in time so the next step is the marriage certificate of my paternal grandparents and at this moment it seems like an elusive document. Apart from that I have nothing to go on.

Thanks for your comments.

As the 1891 census says Mary was born "whitechapell" I wonder if this could be her birth index

Births Sep (quarter) 1858
Cook Mary Ann

Thank you for the reference for Mary Ann Cook in 1858 and I will note it. Unfortunately, it will not link her with my grandfather and until I find a marriage for Mary Ann Cook and George Woodall or some other explanation of their relationship I cannot conclusively make a link. Once I have a marriage certificate, parent's names will be given and then I can seek the birth certificates of both Mary Ann Cook and George Woodall. I suspect that they may not have married or that a name has been changed along the way, making a connection difficult.

However, I will keep this reference in mind, should I uncover other facts. Thank you for your interest.

Well - this family IS a mystery!!!

I managed to get the census up but only by using the reference no. - For some reason George doesn't come up by name for me!

Anyway, I have spent the past 3 hours searching and I can't find anything! - I can't even follow them for certain through the census !! drat !!

I think you are right - there has been a name change somewhere along the line - I will try to find something but I don't hold out much hope.

Good look - I will see what I can come up with, if anything.
