David Report 12 Oct 2008 22:32

Hi, I`m still trying to find out about my great grandfather Arthur Cook born between August 1862 and August 1863 apparently in Southall, London; died 10th. August 1922 in Hanwell, London aged 59.

Marriage cert. ( to Rebecca Goodall ) gives his father`s name as Joseph, but the birth cert. of the only Arthur Cook born in 1862 / 3 in Southall / Uxbridge / Brentford shows the father`s name as James.

I really need help !

Thanks

David Byles

Hi David

Just going by the date of death and the age given: If the age at death was accurate then he could have been born anytime between 11 Aug 1862 and 9 Aug 1864 so you may need to widen your search a bit.

What was the date of the marriage and what age did he say he was then? That should narrow it a bit.

Have you found him in the 1871 census with his parents? The place of birth in that one is likely to be the more accurate one. Sometimes the family moved when the child was young so the child's memories are of where they grew up and they assume that was where they were born.

Hi Glitter Baby,

Yes - that`s the right one. I would like info. about his parents and that`s where the confusion starts. Was his father Jospeh or James, or even a combination of both ?

The census returns between 1841 and 1891 don`t seem to be much help.

Hi Jill,

The age at death (59) was from the death certificate and also the records of the manager / superintendent of the cemetery in Hanwell, so I assume it is correct.

That`s a good point about the child`s memory of where he was born, but I`m afraid I can`t see how he could have been born after August 1863 and still have been 59 when he died ??

You say the marriage cert. gives fathers name as Joseph, but what was his profession?
and what was Arthur's age when he married?

David

David Report 12 Oct 2008 22:56

Hi Catherine,

That is the correct info. I already have their marriage certificate. THanks very much.

Hi David

Depending on when his actual date of birth was I work out birth dates like this:

Age 59 on 10 Aug 1922 - poss dob = 10 Aug 1863.

If his dob was either the day before or the day after 10 August then:

Age 58 on 9 Aug 1922 - poss dob = 9 Aug 1864.
Age 60 on 11 Aug 1922 (if he had lived another day) - poss dob = 11 Aug 1862.

Therefore - dob between 11 Aug 1862 and 9 Aug 1864.

Applying same workings to his age on marriage should narrow the gap a bit. Although this does assume that the age on death cert and at marriage are correct.

Hi David

Sorry, meant to say, according to FreeBMD that is the only Arthur Cook born in Uxbridge area from 1837 to 1889.

Catherine,

According to the marriage certificate, Arthur`s deceased father Joseph had been a labourer.

I keep looking at Arthur Tyler born Southall with father Joseph who is a labourer on 1871 census

I can not find Arthur Tyler on 1881.

Hi Alison,

I know - that`s what makes the question about his father`s name so confusing.

Alison,

Sorry - hadn`t noticed your first message.

I have that birth certificate. That`s what gives the father`s name as James, whereas Arthur`s marriage cert, gives his father`s name (deceased) as Joseph.

Hi Glitter Baby

I`ve looked at the census you mentioned. It`s certainly worth thinking about.

How did you find that record ? Is there some way of searching for only part of a name ?
