I'm very confused about the children of James and Lucy of Selbourn Hampshire. According to the 1851/61/71 census James and Lucy had a daughter Sarah born 1828 and a granddaughter Sarah born 1836. They had a son Adolphus 1835 daughter Ann 1835 and grandchildren James 1852 Elizabeth 1840 and Ann 1856.

Who were the parents of Sarah 1836, James, Ann 1856 and Elizabeth. I just can't understand it all and would be grateful for some help

That's the earliest census I've got, couldn't find them earlier. The visitor Elizabeth is on as the granddaughter later on

Ok Anne,

1851 England Census

Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Lucy

With the age of James & Lucy, i would say it's a fair guess they have children that have left home a while ago!

A marriage,,,

JAMES COOPER
Marriages:
Spouse: LUCY ROBINSON Family
Marriage: 31 MAY 1828 Kingsley, Hampshire, England

Did they have John and then marry? Is John Lucy's and not James? or is this not the right marriage? Hmmmm

Now you see why I'm confused. I think Ann 1835 may be the same Ann who was married to Adolphus and they've put her down as daughter and not daughter in law.

The James 1852 was my Great grandfather and I was trying to go a bit further back than that. I think the problem was they lived on a big estate and not a village, so there must have been lots of cousins marrying (or not) as the case may be

Could James have been married before Lucy do you think?

If i were you i'd order the birth cert for James to see whom his parents were.... For him to be a Cooper he is either illegitimate or the child of a Cooper son.

The 1841 as previously mentioned has Adulphus listed as the 7yr old son. I think you have maybe made this a little more complicated by running ahead of yourself?

You should order the birth cert to be sure which of Lucy & James's children are the parents of James.

It does seem they were in a nice house and could afford the family staying intermitantly... which is nice at the time, but pure hell for us!

Thanks for the help. I'll order Jame's birth certificate, it does seem the only way to sort it all out

In 1871 in Selbourne Sarah (1828) has married a Samuel Chiverton and her father James Cooper is living with them aged 76
Also with them are James Cooper 19 and Annie Cooper 13 -here they are described as "son " and Daughter" - so my interpretation would be they are Sarahs children born before her marriage
The 1861 has a few errors -Adoplphus is correctly shown as married but his wife Ann is shown as Daur instead of Daur-in -law
Also Sarah could hardly be a grandchildand I think her age is wrong and she is in fact the same as the 1828 one
