Paul

Is Edward your father - born 1921? Do you have his birth certificate?

If not you really need to order it to double-check his mum's name.

Paul - you need to order the certs from the GRO.

Would suggest that you pop over to the Tips Board and scroll through the very top thread - info for newbies (or something). You will find all sorts of useful info to get you started.

If there are things you still don't understand - or are confused by - then come back and ask. But do a bit of reading first - you won't regret it and you'll get on a lot faster.

Hi Paul,

You asked about the numbers!

There are GRO (General Register Office) reference numbers and you need these to order a copy of the certificate from GRO.

Birth cert will give you (usually) fathers name and occupation, as well as mothers maiden name and address at birth.

Wedding cert will (usually) give you bride + grooms ages and addresses at time of marriage, occupations, both father's names and occupations and names of witnesses (who often turn out to be related so can prove usefull).

Certs can be ordered on-line and cost £7 - they will be posted to you so you have to wait a little while.

If you want to order either of those certs ask us for more info as to how to do it as there are several 'rip-off' sites which you do not want to use.

Hope this helps,

Dea x

Paul - please consider joining Ancestry or Findmypast - this site is apparently quite expensive to search.
