I am trying to confirm details of the parents of William George Cunningham (b.30th or31st Aug 1830 in Clifton, probably Rodney Place--died 5/4/1889). I know his fathers' name was James, but there appears to have been more than one living in Clifton at the time & I'm having problems linking the family together. I know William had a brother -Arthur, but can't seem to trace him either. All suggestions gratefully received. Debbie Cunningham.

Extracted IGI shows birth of William 30/8/1830 and James & Mary as parents. I couldnt find a marriage of a James Cunningham to a Mary ?? in that area.

I know this is North Devon and Buckfast is mid/South Devon, but could this be the marriage?

I'm not sure what sort of institution this is - possibly a school as several of the boys come from Barbados.

I see that there is also a James Cunningham on the same register. Is this possibly a brother or maybe a cousin???? I don't know whether the family were wealthy enough to send their children to school but Samuel Arthur appears to be in a school in 1851 also.

The girls on this list were all servants.

Mmmm - possibly the James Cunningham with William G in 1841 IS a cousin

Thanks for all the replies.I have already seen stuff on IGI & 1951 census for William, but the 1941 info looks useful. I have James' occupation as'gentleman' on Williams 2nd marriage cert ( I don't have the cert of his 1st to Charlotte Yates). Its looking more likely that he is the son of the James that was a West India merchant & town councillor in Bristol- would explain the school.

Samuel Arthur baptised 21.4.1836 born 18 Nov 1835 @ Clifton St Andrew. Father James noted as a gentleman

Catherine Ann baptised 10.06.1826 born 25 April 1826 @ Clifton St Andrew. James an esquire

Ellen Julia Cunnngham baptised 05.08.1833 born 2 Jul. Living at Rodney Place

Finally this one: Mary Cunningham baptised 01.12.1824, born 1.11.1824. On index it says Abode "Clifton, Ex Montego Bay Jamaica, gentleman"

Thanks again, looks as though I was on the right track. I think Samuel Arthur connects up & I guess he is the one I'd found on 1881 census(via Familysearch site) with an incorrect yr of birth, although it also gives his birthplace as Jamaica.

I wonder where mum and dad were? Have you found them in the census at all?

Chances are James was linked to slave trade as a West India Merchant. I knew there was something slightly dodgy about this family when I married into it !!!

It's all very intresting though! I'm sure Bristol apologised not long ago for the slave trade. I bet the museum is full of it.
