Help needed to find out about my Grandmother, any

I dont really know where to start, is a very diff one for me!
My mothers, mother has a huge eliment of mystery surrounding her!
She was given to my Great Auntie at a docks in the possibly Tenby or Llanelli area by a very well to do family on a type of cruise liner in 1901. The family was well to do and my Grandmother who was a new born baby at the time was dressed in silks and satins and lace. Very un common for "normal" families in those times. My Great Aunt was paid to take her away and bring her up as her own.
My Great Aunt promised my mother she would tell her more before she died. Unfortunatly she never got the chance!
My Mother is 74 and would love to know the truth regarding her blood line descendants and where her mother came from. I too have been fascinated about these events but I do not know where to start. Any help or advice would be very very very much appreciated!

If your grandmother was really "just given" to your great auntie (it would be your great, great auntie I think, as your great auntie would be your grandmother's sister) then I doubt very much whether you will ever find out about her real family.

However I doubt very much whether this would have been the case. Much more likely that your great auntie had an illegitimate baby and told the family she had been "given" this baby to look after.

Of course I could be wrong, but I don't know how you are going to prove anything.

The answer probably lies with your Great Aunt then,
you will need to discover all about her life.

Do you know her full name?
Have you researched the rest of your mother's family to find out where this lady fits in?

Well I have checked birth records and seem to have drawn a blank there. Also my Great aunt was married with 3 children and had only just had a baby of her own.
Thanks for your reply though!

her name was Margaret Elizabeth Davies born approx 1870.
She was married to John Davies again my Mum thinks he was born around 1870.
They had 3 children Charles (1905c), Alice (1907c) and Reginald (1908c).
Am just researching further into their children see if I can find anything there!

You say that your great aunt had only just had a baby of her own yet you say her first child was born c.1903 and yet the baby given to her was given in 1901.

Misty this is great! Where do you get this info from?

Mistycat Report 3 Sep 2008 12:40

Hi Gavin,

Ancestry.co.uk....It's a subscription site but I think they are doing 14 day free trial, if you go on the site it should tell you, that's how I started!

Best wishes with your search..I know what it's like starting off with little or no info!
