Guys - suffering with flu at the mo & brain not really working, wonder if anyone can help.
My grandfather Robert Davies was born 1899 - 1900, he died 1959. I have his marriage certificate to Margaret Walsh 18-11-1933 which names his father as Thomas Davies, omnibus proprietor. I understand Thomas owned a business call Osborne (not sure of spelling) Coaches.
I have a copy of his obituary from the local paper which describes him as having always lived in Neath, South Wales. Though it is a common name I could find only one Robert Davies with no middle name being born locally within the right time frame.
I decided to take a chance & apply for that certificate - 1900 11a, 848 - but got a reply saying that this male did not have a father called Thomas.

My father now decided to reveal to me that Thomas is not his father but his stepfather so I have no real idea whether Robert was born a Davies at all. My father thinks he was but I think that is because he does not want to believe his dad was born out of wedlock. He says his gran must have been married twice to two Davies'.
I don't have any problem paying for certificates etc but what I am worried about is, how do I ever confirm that he is the right Robert? I just don't know how to do that.

PS I don't know Roberts mum's name that is what I was hoping to get from the birth cert

You may have to attack this one sideways !

Was he in the armed forces ?
Did he go to school, and where ?

Try getting records of his life, which may help you with his birth

You may even have trouble with this one even after the 1911 census are released, but if you can find some extra info in the meanwhile it might help pin-point him.

Thanks, Julie!
The plot just keeps thickening ... I managed to trick an older family member into giving me Robert's mum's first name (Jane), in the hope I could find a record of her marriage to Thomas Davies.
There were several possibilities, but knowing my luck, the correct one is Jane Davies marrying a Thomas Rees Davies 1q 1902.
However, when I asked what my grandfather's mum's name is my uncle's immediate response was "his biological mum or his adoptive mum?" .... aaaagggggghhhh!!!
