Where was Bella in 1841 & 1851?

cagsie Report 27 Dec 2009 10:54

I challenge some clever person to find Bella Davies (née James) before her death in 1856.

I know practically nothing about this lady, who I discovered only yesterday was my GGG grandfather's mother. All I know is the following:

John Davis (though usually spelt with an E) married Bella James 1804 in Woodchurch, Wirral. They had 10 children: Peter 1805, Edward 1806, Thomas 1808, John 1809, Thomas 1811, James 1814, Elizabeth 1816, William 1818, Meadows 1820, James 1824. All christened in Thurstaston, Wirral but other than that I know nothing of what happened to the siblings either (apart from Edward - see below)

Have found a death for John age 55 in Thurstaston 1836, making his birth c1780.

Have also found death for Arabella Davies in age 75 in Thurstaston 1856, so born c1780.

I believe these deaths could be my John and Bella. But the hard bit is that I can't find Bella/Arabella in 1841 or 1851, so would be very grateful if anyone could locate her. Even if she's not mine she must belong to someone and should be there somewhere.

Son Edward married Nancy in 1828 in Thurstaston and had his birth place as Woodchurch or Irby on the various census. He died 1879 and I have all the info I need about him and his descendants.

If Bella could be found that would be great, especially if she's living with family.

Also if anyone could find her birth since I don't have any parents or siblings for her.

Many many thanks in advance.

Dea

Dea Report 27 Dec 2009 12:07

Have just checked that 1851 image posted by Andy.

Malden James is actually ARABELLA !!!

It states her as 'step mother' widow, born Caernarvon.

I don't understand though why she should have the name James rather that 'Davies' ???

Must be worth working on though? The age is right and it would also fit that death you found !

cagsie Report 27 Dec 2009 12:17

Oh Dea
you're right - what a star !!
mmm, like you said wonder why she reverted to maiden name of james not davies?!

Dea

Dea Report 27 Dec 2009 12:27

Actually Cagsie, looking at that image again (which is extremely poor), I believe it 'could' actually say Davis/Davies !!

I think it is confusing us as it has been mistranscribed as what was her maiden name.

If you compare all the 'D's on the page, they each have different 'swirly' bits.

Also, there is a Jones family below and the 'J' is completely different ! - Her name has certainly not been written as 'James' !

Taking into account that his pen is definately on it's 'last legs' - can you see that the first letter of her name could very well be a 'D' where the 'swirly bit' has not connected to the paper from his nib ?

If you try to visualise the other 'D's without their 'swirlies' they are exactly the same and the rest of the word fits with the 'avis' bit?

Can you see what I mean - It is very difficult to explain but I can see it - Can you?

cagsie Report 27 Dec 2009 13:17

yes Dea
I see what you mean - and agree
I've had a Davies in the past transcribed as Barlow, believe it or not, due to the "swirly" bits

thanks for taking the time to look - do you think it really is carnarvon though?

Dea

Dea Report 27 Dec 2009 13:35

I think it is Carnarvon or Carnarvonshire - I can't read it as anything else but it is VERY bad writing !

I see the 1841 has her born in Cheshire but 1851 definately doesn't say Cheshire - this enumerator tends to put the County first, then the place and ditto the County if it is the same as the one above. This does not indicate any relationship to Cheshire!
