William Davies b.Morriston, Swansea 1856, son of Wm. Davies and Caroline Suzannah Vivian. Siblings were Mary-Ann, Hannah, Harriet, James & Charles. We thought that only Hannah survived to adulthood, but among some family photos is a postcard showing a couple taken in St. Mark's square in Venice-they look very prosperous. On the back is a message from Willie & Nellie, and is addressed to William's sister Hannah. It was written from Florence in 1912, and he looks to be the right age and there is a family resemblance. On the 1871 census for Swansea, William, then 15 is a colliery worker. Who was Nellie? Did he marry well? His mother Caroline Vivian came from a Cornish family who goes back to Wm. the Conquerer, she married beneath her when she married William senior, a copperman. I know the name is very common, but the name Vivian is still carried on in our branch of the family, maybe it was in the Davies family too. |
