SARAH/ARTHUR/JOSEPH Rose (formerly Davies) Sarah was born approx 1848 in Maxstoke, Warwickshire - maiden name unknown. On 1881 census her surname was DAVIES, and she was living in Formby, Lancs. with her sons Arthur Davies (born approx 1878 in Seaforth nr. Liverpool) and Joseph H Davies (born approx 1880 in Birkdale nr. Southport). The census says she was married, but the husband's name was not entered. By 1891 they had moved to Stretford nr. Manchester, the family name had changed to ROSE, and Sarah was described as a widow. This would mean she was widowed, married Mr. Rose, changed her sons' surnames, and was widowed again during the 1880s, but I can't find the index for this marriage, (nor the birth indexes for her sons) By 1901 Sarah and Arthur had moved a mile or so to Sale; Arthur is described as a farmworker, Sarah as a charwoman. Joseph is nowhere to be found. In 1907 Arthur Rose married Hannah Crewe and moved up the road to Northenden, where 3 daughters (including my grandmother, Bessie Rose) were born between 1908 and 1912. Arthur and Hannah's marriage cert says Arthur's father was "Arthur Rose, deceased, of independent means", and when Sarah Rose died in 1908 of hepatic cirrhosis, the death cert says she was "the widow of Arthur Rose, a brewer's traveller". I can't find any other records of this Arthur Rose "senior". Arthur jnr. , Hannah and their children moved to Market Drayton, Shropshire sometime between 1912 and 1917. Arthur died aged 42 in 1921. So... I still don't know who Arthur and Joseph's father really was, or about Sarah's "marriages". If any of this sounds vaguely familiar to anyone, I'd be grateful for any information
