Today i managed to get information back to about 1826 which was when my great ,great, great grandfather was born. His name was Richard Davies and was from Bedwellty in Wales ,married to Priscilla and had 6 children,John,William,Sarah,Evan,Alfred and Ann, would it be possible to go back any further than that.

Unfortunately the records don't go back futher than 1837 however if you can find Richards marriage it should allow you to go back another generation.

It is possible you may find Richards parents, working on the 25 year gap his parents would be born around1800,living nearby? If you search the early censuses you may find them living with younger relatives etc

Have you found them on the censuses?? I'm danged if I can.

If you could identify him in 1841 with his parents, that would give you their names.

For Richard Davies in Bedwelty in 1841, there seem to be only:

Richard Davies abt 1819 Monmouthshire, Wales Bedwelty Monmouthshire
Richard Davies abt 1834 (not born in county) Bedwelty Monmouthshire
Richard Davies abt 1835 Monmouthshire, Wales Bedwelty Monmouthshire

and those birthdates are pretty far off.

Abergavenny covers Bedwelty, so this could be their marriage (you don't know Priscilla's name already?):

Marriages Dec 1846
Bodman William Abergavenny 26 57
>> Davies Richard Abergavenny 26 57
James David Abergavenny 26 57
Jones John Abergavenny 26 57
Jones Mary Abergavenny 26 57
>> Jones Priscilla Abergavenny 26 57
Phillips Jane Abergavenny 26 57
Worner Ann Abergavenny 26 57

If you want to try ordering the certificate, you'll have to do the search yourself at

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

anyway, to view the image and make sure the numbers etc. are correctly transcribed.

The father's name on the certificate could be compared to the name in any household that looked likely in the early censuses.

So Richard was born about 1816, not 1826, if the 1861 census is accurate and that's them, which it certainly seems to be.

And his place of birth is given there as -- I can't read it either -- "Frallrdin, Breconshire, Wales".

I'm nudging this for you Sandra, since it contains much more information than the two threads you started today.

You should edit the first post to change the subject line -- just click "Edit" in the lower right corner of the top post. Make your subject line something like:

Richard Davies b1816 Bedwelty, married Priscilla

Parish records can be found back to the late 16th century. If you are fortunate to have an aristo in your line you can go back to the domesday book and beyond!

The 1846 marriage I posted was the only one that looked like it might be your Richard & Priscilla.

Why not order the certificate? It will give you a father's name, and you can see whether there is a Richard with that father in the 1841 census who looks like yours.

Your Richard may well have left home by 1841, of course, but you could still look around the area for someone who matched up with the father on the marriage certificate.

Looking for Davies in Wales -- you're looking for a needle in a haystack. You probably will have no way of knowing whether you have found the right one, unless you discover that your Richard's father was named Merlin or something.

One thing to note -- in 1861, eldest son John:

Name: John Davies
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Richard
Mother's Name: Pricila
Gender: Male
Where born: Pembrige, Herefordshire, England

He was born in Herefordshire. The next children were born in Bedwelty.

He was born before the Davies-Jones marriage I found. He could have been a child of one of the parents from before the marriage.

Or that marriage could be completely the wrong one!

No John Davies was born 1843-44 in Leominster district, Herefordshire.

But a John Jones was:

Name: John Jones
Year of Registration: 1843
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Leominster
County: Herefordshire, Hereford and Worcester
Volume: 26
Page: 311

He would have been 17 in the 1861 census.
