I have located my Gt Gt Grandfather in the 1871 census as being a conivct in the District Male Convict Prison in Gillingham, Kent. He is listed as working 1861 and 1881, so at some point between these two, he went "down" for something. He was born c1847.

Would anyone know where I would find out what he did? he lived in Birmingham at the time...
