Ernest Edwards. I am trying to trace the family of my grandfather also called Ernest Edwards born about 1882.In the 1911 census he was living at Ions Avenue, Villa Place Hull and gave his birthplace as London Peckham. He was a seaman when he married Lillian Veronica Balderson in West Hartlepool in 1905. They had 5 sons Ernest 1905, Albert (Jack) 1906, Joseph 1908 born in West Hartlepool, and Percy 1911, George 1914 born in Hull. They returned to live in West Hartlepool in 1916 when my grandmother died. In about 1921 they moved to Haverton Hill ,Billingham , County Durham where he worked as a foreman rigger in Furness Shipyard,he died in 1950. Percy a seaman died 1943 in Salford Manchester as the result of a road accident,Albert (Jack) Bennet ships chief steward died 1965 in Clatterbridge hospital Bebington also as the result of a road accident,Joseph a rigger died 1980 at Stockton on Tees and Ernest died 1982 at Darlington. |

I think I may have found your Ernest Edward edwards in Hampshire in 1901. He was a non com Officer, Corporal in RMA 9 (navy) born 1879. Looking back the most likely parents are Robert Charles Edwards c1846 of Bermondsey and his wife Jane. Jane was put in Caterham asylum so maybe thats why he ended up in the navy. My grandad Herbert edwards was sent to train on a ship for destitute children when his dad died. The ship was called the arithusila or something like that. (mine are no relation) Funny I went to Peckham School....There are family of Robert C edwards and Jane as I have had contact with them online.....Pat |
