David Evans missing from 1881 Census

I am unable to trace my GG grandfather David Evans on 1881 census. He married my GG Grandmother Mary Gummer in Canterbury on 8 March 1881 but he does not appear on census for this year. Mary appears as married and living with her parents in Kent.

David served with Royal Horse Artillery, I can only assume in Kent, as this is where he married Mary. He was born in Reading, Berkshire.

Any idea why he might not show? Where might he be?

Any advise would be appreciated.

Isnt the most likely explanation for this one that he was sent abroad on Army service soon after marriage and before the censs was taken?

so Mary was born in 1863, but what was Davids date of birth?

1881, in the army, there's a good chance he was in India. Maybe the couple married before he left with his regiment.
