David Evans missing from 1881 Census

I am unable to trace my GG grandfather David Evans on 1881 census. He married my GG Grandmother Mary Gummer in Canterbury on 8 March 1881 but he does not appear on census for this year. Mary appears as married and living with her parents in Kent. |

Isnt the most likely explanation for this one that he was sent abroad on Army service soon after marriage and before the censs was taken? |
