Please can anyone help with further information about my Gt. gt Uncle Alginon. He was born 1856c at Speen in Berkshire; despite extensive searching I cannot find any trace of his birth registration. His parents were Francis and Elizabeth(nee Nicholls) Evans. I have found him in the 1861 and 1871 census but nothing more; there is a family photograph which includes him taken about mid 1930s. I believe he was a merchant trader and that he married and had a daughter. Any details would be much appreciated.

He is named Algernon in the census pages. Perhaps it is his middle name but the family used it as a second name. That has often happened to me in the past. If you put Algernon Evans in the search on FreeBMD there are a few marriages you may be able to tie him up with. Good Luck Irene

this is the family in 1861 -
1861 England Census Name: Francis Evans Age: 34 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Elizabeth Gender: Male Where born: Greenham, Berkshire, England Civil parish: Greenham County/Island: Berkshire Country: England Street Address:

Algernon, Alice and Emma all born in Speen. I have marked Alice and Emma's births.
Assume Francis Edward Nicholls Evans was also their son, but he died before the 1861 census.
The only other two males born are Edgar Philip and William.
I have searched the census for 1861 and can't find Edgar Philip. Is it possible they decided to change his name !!??
Not sure about William, but it is quite a common name so difficult to eliminate.
Anyone have any thoughts?

both the parents died 1869 so in the 1871 census Emma Georgina is a visitor with another family in Berkshire. Having trouble finding the other family members in the 1871 census. Irene

Thank you Irene and Choccy for taking the time and trouble to help with my enquiry.
There appear to have been 2 Evans families in the Newbury registration district at this time. Francis Edward Nicholls Evans b Dec qtr 1854 was their son but he died in infancy - deaths Newbury Mar qtr 1855 2c 187.
I have found Alice Frances in the 1871 census boarding at ???Terrace, Newbury. She then appears at Millom, Cumberland in the 1881 census along with her elder sister Hannah Louisa. They are living close to their eldest sister Elizabeth Mary Jane, who by now is married to William Thomas Lawrence. I have no further trace of Emma after the 1871 census - presumably then she married, I think his surname was Brown. So far I have not been able to locate Hannah in 1871 I have Elizabeth Evans death 05 Jun 1869; I do not have Francis Evans's; he is shown on his eldest daughter's marriage cert in 1875 at Summertown, Oxford (not as deceased); he has changed his occupation from coal merchant to baker. An A. M. A. Evans is present, I take this to be Algernon. His reappearance in 1933 has him staying with his eldest sister and this would coincide with the family photograph. I will have a look at the FreeBMD marriages and see if I can find anything relevant.
Many thanks, Gillian

My thanks again to both of you for more information regarding Algernon. Today I have found him leaving England, with his wife Mary A. Evans, 10 September 1931 on board the "Glenogle" bound for Shanghai. Irene please can you give me any further details about his voyage in 1933; the Mrs Lawrence he stays with is his eldest sister, my gt. grandmother. She died in 1938. I had a look at marriages on FreeBMD but nothing obvious came to light, I suppose it is possible he married in China. Any ideas as to how that could be checked? and indeed any further information about him. Presumably he and his wife died there. Gillian
