For a family genealogical get together in Winnipeg, Manitoba I am in need of your searchers indulgences. My ggrandfather was David Evans born in Llanvabon, Glamorgan in 1844. In the 1881 census he, his wife Mary (single name unknown but may be Jenkins) and 2 kids including Catherine Elizabeth, 8, (my grandmother d 1936 Wendover, Bucks) were living Quakers Yard Cottage, Llanfabon, Glam. He described (at age 37) as a retired grocer. I have blank invoices from the business showing it at Quakers Yard in the 1870s. Searching 1871 census in relevant place names for DE at Lanvabon, Quakers Yard, Treharris, Edwardsville there do not appear to be any records. In Merthry Tydfil there are only 3 DEs but none appear to be relevant. Any ideas, help. Thanks |

Once you know Mary's maiden name, you can find the marriage....the cert will name their fathers (if they knew them) |

Flick - just trying to find out where David Evans was in 1871 at time of census. Such a common name how does one decide which is relevant. Your last input was interesting as it shows that DE as a boarder with the Phillips. On my grand parents marriage certificate (at Merthyr Tydfil 1902) 2 of the 6 witnesses are Phillips but none of those quoted. Thanks for your help and Tempest, too! |

What about this one? - He may not have been a grocer at that time? |

Flick - your 1891 census report is relevant. Looking at my gparents marriage certificate again I see there were actually 3 Phillips witnesses and the minister was a D. Phillips. They were actually married in Treharris not MT at the Congregational chapel. My gfather was minister of the Congregational church at Edwardsville at the time. And my ggfather David Evans was described as a "Gentlemen" in the certificate. So it is interesting that in 1891 there was a Phillips staying with them. |
