OK, so it's looking very likely that the Broad family have informally adopted Alice??? I'll trace William and Elizabeth back abit more to see if they have any children, if they don't I would think that Alice being adopted is highly likely.

There doesn't seem to be a birth registration for Alice in Croyden, I'm really thinking adoption now. If she was adopted she was a very lucky child....... many children weren't wanted, but to find a loving family to take on an unwanted child was rare.

I can't trace Harriet Skinner on the 1851 or 1871 census, this was most likely a fictious name. Alice was probably never even aware she was adopted.

They say many skeletons come out of cupboards when researching...... this is the first for me when I've been looking for someone else.

Hi Dee how funny been away for a few days, looked at the cencus you did for me and came up with the idea that Harriet Skinner was a boader with the Broads at the time and had Alice.
