Furniss Potter connections

My husband's family has a "tradition" of adding the name Furniss to all the family descendants whose real surname is actually Potter. There is a family story that they have to do this as there was some relative called Furniss who only had daughters and one of the Potters promised to carry on the family name. The earliest record of Furniss is in the 1840s and the Potters came from the Leeds area in Yorkshire. Does anyone know anything else about this Furniss family? Would love to find out the true story,
Alice Potter
