Is this their marriage? (from Ginny's census)

Marriage Indexes
Surname Forename(s) Spouse's Surname Spouse's Forename(s) Year Church / Register Office Registers At Region Reference Order On-line
GARDNER Archibald MAXWELL Jemima 1883 Toxteth Park, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool Lancashire REG_TP/3/169

It's probable that they are conformist eg Catholic. and had a registrar attend the ceremony. This is more likely then attending a Registrar office in those says.

It doesn't list the quarter, only the year. Perhaps someone can check the quarter?

OK Ann. Well before you can go any further you need to get the marriage cert. otherwise you may find yourself following the wrong line. I(t will cost £9.95 from the GRO and you can order online

They married at St bride with St Saviour in Liverpool?

Astra

Astra Report 4 Sep 2010 11:36

It will give you her Father's name and occupation but not her mother's name and it will give you the address she was living at when she married and the names of the witnesses to the ceremony who may also be family members. Every little bit of information helps to identify her family. This is the only way you can be sure that you are following the correct line. Every bit of research should be backed up with Birth and marriage certificates.

You can also get it from Liverpool Registration service which will have the original signatures on. I think it's slightly cheaper, I haven't ordered in a while but I think you have to provide the self addressed envelopes.

Alternatively, if you've got the time, a cheaper option If you're close to Liverpool you may be able to search through the parish records for that quarter at St Brides and St Saviours if the records are on microfilm. You can normally do this at the record office in the library but I think its closed for renovation. The microfilm records MAY be at the museum now (if all has gone to plan) or if they haven't been put on microfilm you can sometimes see the original parish registers in the archives which is now somewhere close to town - Sandhills I think?

Hello Ann,

Some Lancashire birth/death and marriage indexes for free are on Lancashire BMD. (not every year or every area so you have to check):

http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

I think you can get most indexes on Ancestry but there's a subscription fee. You can view the census records there too,

Some of their birth/marriage/death index data comes from Free BMD:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

which is free but not completely finished yet (but it's getting there)

It means Alice M Leece married Charles O Tiplady in 1918.

Lancashire bmd says this:

Marriage Indexes
Surname Forename(s) Spouse's Surname Spouse's Forename(s) Year Church / Register Office Registers At Region Reference Order On-line
LEECE Alice M TIPLADY Charles O 1918 Liverpool, St. Bride With St. Saviour Liverpool Lancashire 2047LP/12/213

which tells you that they married at St Bride and St Saviour in Liverpool.

You'd need to see the marriage to see the witnesses. Sometimes witnesses can be family or friends however sometimes witnesses can be strangers. I've seen witnesses on a few parish registers on nearly every record which shows that they didn't really know those getting married.
