Hi, Trying to trace my great grandfather Walter Gardner. He married my great grandmother Cissie Kate Franks in 1908 and claimed to be 28 date of birth 1879/1880 and a widower whose wife had died of TB. The family legend is that he ran away from home to join the army to work with horses (cavalry?)having lied about his age, His mother bought him out once. He ran away again so his mother left him to it this time. He then became a groom. He ended up in Guildford in Stoughton lane when he married Cissie. He served in the 1st world war and died in 1956 apparently aged 86 which would put his date of birth 1869/1870 so he gained 10 years (or lost at wedding). He never had any more contact with his family after his marriage. When he married in 1908 his name on the marriage cert is Gardiner and he says his father is John a bricklayer. When he died he has aquired an Albert as his middle name although we are unable to find any Walter Albert Gardners born in the relevant time scales. Any help any one could give would be appreciated.
