John Gemmill born in Cumnock, Scotland 1774 emigrated to Canada with his wife Anne (Weir - maiden name) b. 1781 Cumnock. They had 13 children all born in Scotland and some of them emigrated to Canada with the parents or a little later in
the early 1820's. Two of the sons John born 1813 and David born 1819 were farmers in Ontario. David Gemmil married Ann McNicoll in 1840 at Ontario and they had 5 daughters + 3 sons:
John born 1840, Alex b. 1846, Andrew b. 1855.
John Gemmil married (1) Janet Crawford and (2) Isabella Muir
in 1845 at Bathurst District. The 2nd marriage produced a son
William b. 1849 at Rosetta. William Gemmil married Mary Porteous in Ontario. They had 18 children that I found so far!
The birth dates are exact or close approx. All were born in Ontario:
Lizzie b. 1872, Bella b. 1874, Philip? b. 1876, John b. 1876 ( a farmer later), William b. 1878, James 1879, Frank b. 1881, Ralph b. 1883, Mary b. 1884, Clara b. 1886 Arthur b. 1888, Gordon b. 1889, Ethel b. 1890, George b. 1890, Laurence b. 1893, Laura b. 1893, Grace b. 1894, Wilfred b. 1896.
The names of the children were very hard to decipher on 1901 Census & 1891 Census but are all accurate but for 1 or 2 perhaps. Later the father William and Mary (wife) moved to Pilot Mound, Manitoba where he died in 1926 aged 77 and she died
in 1936 aged 83 - what an amazing woman! Some of the children are listed as living there in Manitoba when adults.
Please if these are any of your ancestors could you leave some information. I never knew till recently that my scottish ancestors on my mother's side emigrated to Canada and would like to contact some living relations descended from John Gemmill born in Scotland 1774 through to my present record. I have no photographs and it would be wonderful if anyone has of these Gemmils. Please note spelling of the surname alters so soundex often produces results I found! Celia
