Find Ancestors

I am trying to find out about William Godsoe, Liverpool. c 1800. I cannot find a birth in this country. There is one other Godsoe family in Liverpool at the same time, coming from Canada. Cannot find a connection to them but presume there is one. Cannot find Williams birth in Canada either. Any suggestions.

Thanks for this, I have already compiled a long list of Godsoes but can't find the limk between William and James Witney. We have tried for a birth cert for Liverpool but none traced. Quite afew people seem to be looking for William and like me unable to get any further back.

hi janes dates of birth seem to be out cant understand why unless she lied about her age all the children seem to match the 1851 census

Have researched Janes family in IOM and have managed to go quite a long way back. Have lists of Williams children (my 2 x gr grandfather being one of them). The family thought he was originally Norwegian and did in fact visit members of the family there in the 60s but now no trace of them. Godsoe seems to be a New Brunswick name, someone did tell me that the Godsoes originated in the UK, went to US as original settlers, had to move to Canada after Civil War and gradually came back to US and possibly Norway as they were seamen and whalers.This story would make sense if only I could find Williams birth.

Since posting in 2009 the only thing that I have come across for William Gordon Godsoe was a birth in 1799 in Liverpool. This was registered as William Godsoe Gordon. At first I thought it maybe mistranscribed but it isn't. It's too much of a coincidence for it not to be him.
His parents are listed as James Gordon and Ellin Jackson. They were married in Liverpool in 1797. Parents names are too common to be able to determine who they are.
I did wonder if something had happened soon after William's birth that meant they left the country for Canada. William reappeared in Liverpool at the same time as James Witney Godsoe but I still haven't found a connection. My assumption is that they are brothers. James' father was a James. There is some confusion though as on familysearch it mixed his wife's parents up as his.
The children of William and James have quite a lot of the same first names.
I have all the census' and descendants but not sure where to go with this now. Any bright ideas ?
