As far as I've always been told, it's an Armargh name. But it probably arose in a few places.

The Green family surname is one of the most common and widespread of English surnames, either a nickname for someone who was fond of dressing in this color (Old English grene) or who had played the part of the ‘Green Man’ in the May Day celebrations, or a topographic name for someone who lived near a village green, Middle English grene (a transferred use of the color term).

Imagine 3 men in a village called John. One was a blacksmith, one lived by the green and one was the son of William

To differentiate between them, they would probably be known as John Smith, John Green and John Williamson.

Therefore I doubt that the surname Green originates from one place on particular as there were village greens everywhere.

Google is a wonderful tool!
