Could this be the family in 1891? Correct ages for Maria and Mary.There are many reasons why the family moved. If she is a widow and had no local family to help, it might have been either move to large town to find whatever work she could or go into the workhouse. |

The workhouse was seen as the last resort. It meant the family would be split up and mother and children would not see each other. Conditions were harsh and food poor. It could be that they didn't go to local towns as people might know them and hear of their misfortune. |
