Same family in 1901 with a daughter Margaret:-

Name: James Green
Age: 16
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1885
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Margaret
Gender: Male
Where born: Gateshead, Durham, England

Civil Parish: Gateshead
Ecclesiastical parish: St Paul
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Registration district: Gateshead
Sub registration district: Gateshead
ED, institution, or vessel: 5

Household schedule number: 116
Household Members:
Name Age
James Green 16 - Coal Miner
Margaret Green 37 born: Sacriston, Durham
Margaret Green 2 born: Gateshead, Durham
Sarah Green 11 born: Gateshead, Durham
William Green 41 born: Rosker, Durham - Coal Miner

The 1884 marriage that Diddydoris found is the only one that seems to fit even if the name is not quite what you state!

Catherine Report 1 Dec 2008 23:45

If the above is correct family then this is probably Margaret in 1871:-

Name: Margaret Robinson
Age: 6
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Jane
Gender: Female
Where born: Sacriston, Durham, England
Civil Parish: Witton Gilbert
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Registration district: Chester Le Street
Sub registration district: Chester le Street
ED, institution, or vessel: 17
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 131
Household Members:
Name Age
James Leeman 24
James Robinson 30 - born: Kelloe, Durham - Miner
James Robinson 1
Jane Robinson 31 - born: Winlaton, Durham
Margaret Robinson 6
Richard Robinson 12
William Robinson 3

There are several Margaret Robinsons born at the correct time but only one in Sacriston.

The marriage certificate will confirm fathers name and profession!

Doris

Doris Report 1 Dec 2008 23:57

sorry my grandfathers name was James Green thanks

Catherine

Catherine Report 2 Dec 2008 10:14

So, if your grandfathers name was James, then the census records would seem to be the correct ones.

Problem is I looked for a marriage William Green to Margaret Robson between 1875 and 1885 anywhere in England and came up with nothing.

I presume if you are so sure about the name that that is the name on James' birth certificate, but are you sure there is no mistake on the cert.?
If you don't have his birth cert. it would be a good idea to buy a copy to check the mothers maiden name!

I also checked 1871 census for Margaret ? born 1864 +/- 1yr in County Durham Sacriston or Witton Gilbert, which are the two places Margaret gives as her place of birth, and the only one that came up is the census that I posted with parents James and mother Jane!

I think it is worth while keeping this on file, even if you don't believe it to be the correct one, until you are 100% sure it is not the one you are looking for.

Sorry I haven't been back sooner, but Xmas shopping has to be done sometime.
In my experience most Registry Offices will check info that they have on their files if you are not sure about something on a certificate.
Might be worth sending the Registry Office in question a mail explaining the situation and asking if they could just check their records so that you can be sure there is no mistake. If you ask nicely they are usually pleased to help and very very rarely ask for a fee.
I think it's worth a go for peace of mind.

hi Catherine iv just came on to see if you saw my message. i called at the registry office today and they checked and the cert is right her name was Robson. i dont know ware to go from here, any sugestions thanks Doris

Catherine Report 4 Dec 2008 10:34

I'm not really sure Doris!
You could always ask the Registry Office to check the records for sisters Sarah and Margaret to see if the maiden name is the same.
At the same time maybe they would be willing to help you find a marriage between William Green and Margaret Robson, or at least check the marriage reference to see if the name is Robson and not Robinson.
I've had another look on freebmd, and can't find anything, sorry, it's so frustrating when this kind of thing happens. The only other explanation is that they never actually married.
I have someone in my tree who married an Elizabeth Haymonds but the mother on his sons birth certificate was Elizabeth, but maiden name Phillips, simply because he had an affair with someone which resulted in an illegitimate child.
Hope the Registry Office can help you find the explaination!
Regards Catherine
