A marriage cert should give his fathers name and then we could pehaps find him in 1841 census

Hi again

Was your grt grandfather Stephen born in Grafton NSW in 1868? Died in 1911 in Grafton?

If so I think he may be the son of Wm jnr and a different Sarah, ie the Wm Green aged 1 in the 1841 census Janice posted. He married Sarah Morgan in 1863 in Grafton (reg 1991).

Do you have Stephen's birth/death/marriage cert? This would be the best place to start to make sure you have the right family before you end up on the wrong track.

You can use a transcription agent for bdms in NSW (just Google it).

The most likely match for Wm snr's death can be found at www.nsw.nsw.gov.au and it is William GREEN, died aged 68 in Grafton in 1886 (reg 9790). This makes him born c1819 which fits the census info.

A Sarah GREEN died in Grafton in 1885, father Thomas, reg 9999.

Australian death certificates are very interesting and useful documents and well worth the money. They usually list birthplace, parents, spouse and all children as well as death date and place, and cause of death. Of course it depends on how much the informant knows - sometimes there are gaps!

Good luck
