The vanishing Stedman Green!

Hi All,

Stedman Green Islington (1847) son of Francis F H Green and Caroline Stedman.

I have Stedman on all census up to 1861 in the UK. In 1871 he travels with the Clerkenwell Society to Canada and appears on the census there. ( I have a short piece re his journey)

I am unable to find him on the 1880/81 UK Canada USA census. However he is recorded as sailing from the UK to New York 1883. So we know he came back to the UK but when? I sent for a marriage which took place in 1879 in Hackney between "a" Stedman Green and Isabella Long, the age, place of residence fit but he says his father is Frank Charles Green, the Frank/Francis senario I understand as Francis refers to himself as Frank on one of the census, but where did the Charles come from?
I feel sure this is his marriage, as there seems to be only 1 Stedman Green on all the census that fits. So in the 1881 UK census his wife is with a child alone no sign of Stedman by 1891 she is a Widow. Where did he vanish to, where did he die? It is driving me around the bend! Anyone with any tips hints ideas etc or should I give in to defeat!

Only one birth:-

Births Mar 1847 (>99%)
Green Stedman Islington 3 284

so I presume you have the cert. as you know parents names!

1851he is living with his grandmother with (I presume brothers)
Percy Green 9
Harry F C J Green 7
1861 he is an apprentice to a master draper

so he is not shown on any of the census records living with his parents.
Have you found his parents in the census records? If yes, then what was his fathers occupation?
Does it match that given for fathers occupation on the marriage cert.?

Hi Catherine,

Yes I have the parents on the census, Stedmans fathers full name was Francis Fiddler Hand Green, you would think with a name like that it would be a starter for ten!

Yes he was along with siblings living in Suffolk with the Stedman grandparents for a time, and no he does not appear with his parents on any census. His father Francis Green was in 1841 a warehouseman in 51 a draper(wholesale) in 61 A draper in 71 a Clerk and in 1881 a salesman. Stedman must have died somewhere but where?

Thanks for your time.

Sorry Ann, can't find anything either. I think he must have died in the US or Canada but I don't have access to records over there.
Hope someone else will be able to have a look for you.

pm from Ann:-

Yes I have most of the children through the census(siblings) as far as I am aware Stedman and Isobella Green only had the 1 child Frederick 1880, then Stedman does not appear with them on the 1881, by the 1891 Isobella is listed a a widow, so sometime between 81/91 Stedman has died.......or has he? Could he have deserted them, and there is stigma attached, so easy to say "widow"

Thanks Catherine!! I nearly choked on my coffee when I saw that pop up, I thought someone had tracked down the illusive Stedman Green!!

Tried to make a bit more sense of the divorce papers today, as there were bits that were quite hard to read, but Stedmans dad sounds like he could be quite violent and abusive towARDS HER AND THE CHILDREN, SO NOT A HAPPY RESULT, HAVE BEEN BUSY WITH WELSH SIDE OF THE FAMILY TODAY DOWN AT THE FLINTSHIRE RECORD OFFICE....oops sorry about the caps did not notice! that was all doom and gloom in the workhouse records!!
