A tricky one! I have found the following in the 1881 Census;
Green family at 9 Seaton Terce, Sculcoates, York (Hull).
(PRO Ref RG11, folio 4760/109 pg no 23)

I cannot find any Birth certificates for the children in this family.
William R Son age 10
Esma E Daughter age 6
(Mary L Head Widow age 44)

Can anyone help? Thanks Rebecca.

William may not have been registered but Esma should have been, have you looked on Free BMD
Mind you at aged 6 she may have been born c 1874 so still missed as it wasnt compulsary till 1875 when a fine incurred for non registration

Ahhhh! That makes sense!
I have searched many many times over the last few years!
This is a hobby that I put away sometimes and then pick up again at random moments!
I didn't realise that it wasn't compulsory, and they may not be registered.
Thanks for the help!
Do you have any suggestions on how I can find church records... I live in Australia though!
Rebecca.

Well in theory it was compulsory when registration started in 1837 but then the Registrar was responsible for finding the births in his area and as many families moved around or just wouldn't open the door in case was the tally man ! then lots of births were missed . In 1875 it the became the responsibility of the parents to register the birth within 42days ie 6 weeks with a fine for late registration . This period is still in force today

Have you tried finding the births on familysearch? It's a free site; best way of searching is on the IGI. It won't give information for a certificate and may only give baptism, but from those I've seen where a birth and a baptism is recorded, the baptism seems to have been very soon after birth. I suppose that in those times you couldn't be sure if your infant would survive.

Hotham is a Yorkshire parish abt 20 km WNW of Hull.

Ancestry 1871 for Yorkshire has a Mary Ledvans Green a=33 with pob=Hotham, Lincs. I don't sub to Ancestry, so I can't see more.

Microfilms and Microfiche Records can be accessed at Family History Centres located in the Church meetinghouses. It cost roughly $5 to order a film in.
The staff are very helpfull.

Thank you for all the help, I am certain we have the right people... I'll order the Birth Cert for Agnes J Norwood.
And I just found a marriage certificate for a Mary Ledvans a bit risky, but I think I'll order it anyway.
I may be back for more help later!
Thanks again, Rebecca.
