Hi I am still trying to find ny grandfather birth record not having much luckI have a Baptism record which say he was born 3rd august 1899 at the church of the holy ghost and s stephen sheperds bush london parents elizabeth green john green but on the 1901 cenus it say he was age six? also all of his family where born in kensington london but on 1901 cenus his place of birth was down as hammersmith the only thing I can think of that he could have been born in hammersmith hospital because the story goes he mother either die in childborn or not long after because on the 1901 cenus John Green is down as a widower.

If he was baptised in 1899 and all he had as a record was his baptism certificate - not his birth certificate - then he may, when he was older, have assumed that was his birth date.

The odd thing is that his parents would have known how old he was so the info in the 1901 "ought" to be at least reasonably correct.

It is possible that his birth was not registered. Registration became compulsory in 1865-ish, but, they were still not all baptised. I read an article fairly recently that explained that if one child in a family was not registered, chances are that the rest weren't registered either - even after compulsory registration started. This was calculated by some chap comparing baptism records with registration records. First step to check this out would be to see if you can find registrations of his siblings.
