Hi I'm trying to get info on the parents of my great grandfather herbert hall, I'm fairly new to this and its a bit tricky innit? would it be best to just send for his birth cert? what if I can't find the entry in BMD? would appreciate any tips

Getting his birth certificate is the only sure way to get the names of his parents, including his mother's maiden name, and where he was born/where they lived.

Then you can start searching back with some certainty ..... finding his parents marriage certificate and ordering that will give you the name sof their fathers and where they were living at the time of marriage. Thta information helps in searching the censuses.


Therefore your first step is to buy that birth certificate.

Tor buy a certificate, go to www.gro.gov.uk, click on Ordering Certificates Online

Follow instructions. They will ask if you have the GRO reference Number. The naswer is YES .. it is the set of two numbers to the right of the line below after Sheffield, ie 9c 500

do you have great grandmothers surname to look for a marrige index a cert. should give fathers name.Do you have any detail of children and births as a cert. will give mothers maiden name if you don't know it and the work backwards from there.
