Find Ancestors

I'm trying to make sense of the information I have on this lady, my gr grandmother. She is listed in the 1891 census with her husband Arthur (31) and children as being 26 years old (with her eldest aged 8). This is impossible as I have her mariage cert for 1882 when she is shown as being 26 to her husband's 28. Her father is James, a bricklayer.
I've had the dickens of a problem tracing her anyway: she is shown in 1891 as being born in St Stephens, which I have established as being in the St Albans district.The only other trace I found of her was aged 14, staying with her sister in Billericay in 1871 - she married in Billericay. Tracing the sister, also born St Stephens, I found the right father plus the whole family. I eventually found her with the family listed as Martha C, aged 4, in 1861 and, indeed her birth is registered as Martha Charlotte. However all other records have her as Charlotte. Her grandaughters knew of her as Charlotte (she died aged 39 so they never knew her). 1881 census has parents living alone, father bricklayer as per marriage cert.
Am I going crazy? I've been thrown all over again by the 1891 census and this loss of her first name. I can't find any other records for another Charlotte with a bricklayer father called James. HELP!

Charlotte is listed as being 31, not Arthur. Actually on the image I think she may be 34 which would roughly tie in with her birth of 1856.

Actually, on this 1881 census for Arthur Markham, he is down as being born in 1855 as he is 28 here. He should probably be down as 38 on the 1891 census. This would then tie in with your marriage cert details.

Thank you everyone. It looks as if the mistakes on age are with the censuses, as seems to have been common. The rest of the evidence stacks up well. Case closed I think
