Hoping someone could help me...

I've managed to trace my family tree back to my great great great grandfater James Hall b. 1821 Somerset. James married Martha Seal in 1850 and had 7 children together.

However, I'm struggling to find James' parents. In the 1841 census I believe he was living on a farm and not with family so struggling.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Michelle

Do you have James's marriage cert for name of his father?

I don't as yet - was trying to get as much info from online resources before I got certificates.

Well someone might come up with something, but as far back as that, I think you will need the cert to verify father's name if you want to go back even further, and to be sure you're on the right track.

Thanks Sue.

Stupid question - do I just contact the registry office in the area they were married?

You can order the cert online here

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

It will cost £7 and be sure to tick where it asks if the gro ref no. is known.

In this case it is vol 8 page 77

I think I maybe having problems with James Hall, his marriage and children.

In the 1871 census I have James Hall married to Martha Hall with 7 children:
Alfred Hall (1869)
Ellen Hall (1867)
Florence Hall (1865)
Laura Hall (1863)
George Hall (1860)
Henry Hall (1857)
William Hall (1853)

The 3 youngest were born in Cardiff and the 4 oldest in Somersetshire. However I can't find any of their births - is it possible the kids weren't James'? And therefore had different surnames at birth?

Can anyone offer some advice here?
Thanks
