Beatrice Report 17 Oct 2009 05:27

I am trying to find the part of England from which John and Elizabeth HALL nee HILL originated. They migrated to Sth. Australia in 1840 with their 2 sons and 2 daughters who were young children. I would also like to know the birth dates of all six people. I would appreciate any assistance that anyone can offer.

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Oct 2009 05:35

Please will you post the names of the children, and approximate birth years.

That may help to find people with such common names!!

Unfortunately, they leave England before the first full census, which was in 1841.

Thus it will mean looking on www.familysearch.org, the Mormon site, and possily parish registers if we can get an idea of where they are from.

???????? are these two possible children of your John and Elizabeth???

Melksham is the registration district that then included Trowbridge, which seems to be where the family is from.

Children are (to the best of my research)

Thomas John abt 1824 - 17/7/1909. My husband's family are his descendants.
John Hall abt 1830 - 2/6/1864
Elizabeth abt 1840 - 24/6/1904
Kaziah (Kezia) 1843 - 19/5/1926
Mary Ann 1845 - 26/7/1910
Lydia abt 1851 - 6/7/1866

Louisa is the name of a daughter of Thomas John and Louise is the name of a daughter of Elizabeth, so there may have been a Louisa in the family, and she may be one of the daughters.
Louisa 6/4/1836, may be the other daughter who came out on the ship

Elizabeth born June 1838 and Daniel born Sept 1839 are possiblities as well. I will check them on the South Australian BMD records when I am next in my local Library genealogy resources.

Add to the siblings
Louisa 24/4/1836 - 6/6/1875

She maybe the 4th child who was on the ship coming to Aust.

Thank you Sylvia and Tony

With your help I have managed to sort out the siblings. It appears that the JOHN and ELIZABETH from Wiltshire may be the correct parents as the dates fit. I spent a day searching Oz BMD records in local Library.

John 1830 - 1865
Thomas John 1833 - 1901
Louisa 1836 - 1880
Elizabeth 1840 - 1904 born at sea
Kaziah 1843 - 1926
Mary Ann 1845 - 1910
Lydia 1851 - 1866

Thank you Derek,
Everyone has been so helpful that I have now been able to make headway with research here in Oz
Louisa married Henry Williams and they had 10 children

To Michele

HALL and HILL are such common names that my research for the correct ones has been tedious, even here in South Australia. But the challenge has been fun.
