Hope someone might be able to help, I am looking for John Hall who married Margaret Hall (maiden name is Hall) of Armagh Ireland, they married in 1891 Hebburn, Durham. They married the day after the 1891 census but looked for John Hall around the area on the 1891 census but not knowing his DOB or where born am struggling,am assuming John would have been born around 1860's give or take a few years. I thought seeing as he was marrying the next day he would be local........On M cert it states his father being a Robert Hall and that's all I have. I know John and Margaret moved to Glasgow and am waiting for the 1911 census to come out up there. If anyone has a John Hall with father Robert Hall would you please reply, many thanks x

Hi Jax, no nothing only says St John's Parish but on the 1891 census I have margarets family living here:-

31, Station Lane
District South Shields, South Shields
Parish Hedworth Monkton and Yarrow
Administrative County Durham

and have you found John and Margaret on the 1901 census?

The marriage certificate should give the address of the bride and groom, the age of both the groom and bride, and the occupation of the groom, possibly of the bride, and of the two fathers. There should also be the signatures of 2 witnesses (sometimes more).


Those categories have been standard since about the 1840s



There should be much more on there than just the parish


Are you sure that you have the actual marriage certificate?

The registration is difficult to find ....... the page number for John has been read by one transcriber as 964, by another as 96_ ............ ie, she/he couldn't read it. There are no other names shown with the registration for John

I've looked on the image, and it is unreadable!

If we therefore assume it could be 969, then, the partner registration has to be the one posted below it, where there are 3 women and 1 man!

In which case, Margaret has got a middle name that you did not mention.

I have the marriage cert in front of me :
1891 April 6th st Johns, Hebburn Co Durham
John Hall married Margaret Anne Hall both full age
Father of John Hall is listed as Robert Hall
Father of Margaret Hall is listed as Thomas Hall.
No address just says St John's parish !!!!!!!

Witnesses Samuel Hall and a Jane Lewis not sure on connection to the above, Samuel could be connected to either of them as Margaret had a brother Samuel born 1871 .........

I know that Margaret was born in Armagh 1865 and moved with her parents Thomas and Mary (McKenna, MckInney, McKenny) around 1870's as they had a son Samuel Hall born in Walker (1871 census) being months old. Thomas and Mary also had William, Mary, Elizabeth. All born Armagh, lurgan. Found a brill site just now that has the births of Eliza (Elizabeth) and Margaret Anne. Parents Thomas and Mary were also married at Ardmore church 1857 in Lurgan.

I am really trying to find more about John Hall's parents, checked census but as of yet not such luck. As I said before Margaret and John moved to Glasgow and I have all info on them as my Granny was a Hall. John Hall either died of left the family around 1910-1920 as Margaret died in 1920 and all the children were alone. Hope this all makes sense xx
