Trying to find Hall

Beverley Report 12 Dec 2006 08:41

I would like to make closure on my grandparents, Robert Nicholas and Margaret Ann Hall nee Bird. It seems Robert abandoned a pregnant Margaret and 3 children at the Hexham Workhouse about 1903. He was known to be working at Haydon and had been to court a few times for non support. My uncle Tommy was born while his mother was in the Workhouse. In about 1908/9 Margaret disappeared from the Workhouse leaving the 4 children. She wrote a letter to the Matron saying the children would be better off in the Workhouse as all she could give them was a life of poverty. She promised to get work and somewhere to live then come for the children, but this never happened. She was traced to Gateshead, but nothing further. The Hall children were housed out to various people for a number of years, until finally Dorothy and Thomas were together with a Mrs Allport at Corbridge, and John and Robert went to their uncle and aunt. My mother never spoke of her childhood, so I don't know what happened to the parents. It would be nice to be able to make closure on them. Bev
