Hi, I'm really hoping that someone out there can help me trace my grandfather's family. His name was Ernest Hall, born in Derby 7th May 1880. I have located his marriage cert and discovered that his father's name was Charles. It was a surprise to learn that he was divorced when he married my grandma. He spent many years in India working for the East Bengal Railway at Kanchrapara. In 1917, he married my grandma, Ethel Maud Breese, in Calcutta and they had 2 children - my mother, Nancy Evelyn and her brother, John. In about 1928 the family returned to Derby, where grandad eventually bought a tobacconist shop. Both he and my grandma died in Derby hospitals. No-one seems to remember anything about my grandad's family. I have contacted various record offices and have studied census, BMD info etc on the Internet. I can only conclude that his (and any siblings) birth was not registered. The only clues I have are a couple of photos with ' Uncle Harold and Aunty Alice at Sinfin Lane Farm 1923 ' on the back. Also a letter to my late mother from her cousin Betty, whose family emigrated to America. In the letter, she writes about her late husband Leslie, her brother Charles who lived in Massachusetts and a son, Harry William, in Boston. This letter was postmarked 1975. As there were several Ernest Halls with fathers named Charles living in Derby at the appropriate time, but none with the correct birth date, I cannot proceed further with that branch of my tree. I'd be pleased to hear from any family member from his first marriage or anyone with information about his life / family before he was married. I'd particularly like to know when he went to India. Thanks, Catherine |
