James Hartley b1859 Hoylake Cheshire

James was my great grandfather's half brother, would like to know what became of him.

His parents were Henry Hartley and Alice Silcock b1835 Hoylake.

By 1862 Alice had married John Davies and had my great grandfather John William Davies.

She later married William Cookson and then Alfred Balderson. Have copies of certificates so know that it is the same lady and not just a coincidence of names and places.

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Cagsie

Which, if any, census do you have him on?

cagsie Report 8 Jun 2008 12:57

He's on 1861 as James Davies with mother Alice and stepfather John.

Also I think he's on 1871 as James Sherlock, as grandson of John Silcock, Alice's father. I think it could be him as John only had 2 daughters Alice and Betsy (who married a Roberts). I don't know why he'd be down as a Sherlock though, unless for example that's what he really was and Mr Hartley wasn't his father!!

Most confusing, even if this isn't him in 1871, who is James Sherlock?

UPDATE 2:

that Silcock/White marriage certificate gives no details for James' father - I take this to mean it could be my James (who didn't want to be reminded of his father, or perhaps his mother never told him who it was) and at least it doesn't rule him out

also I've just discovered that in 1881, living in Prospect St, Aberystwyth (named as where James was living at time of marriage) was James' grandfather's step-daughter

what are the chances of that?

is this James Silcock my James Hartley?

thoughts on this would be appreciated
