Marina Report 24 Mar 2010 02:19

Trying to locate 4 Hartley brothers who were born between 1872 and 1882 in Whitehaven, Cumberland.
Father - Robert Hodgson Hartley born 1843 in Ulverston, Lancashire. Mother - Grace. Family resided at 20 High Street, Whitehaven.

James Hodgson, Robert, Henry and Edward Hartley, have disappeared from Cumberland, UK, to parts unknown between 1896 to 1911. They had an older brother, David.
James Hodgson Hartley married in 1896 to Elizabeth Ashley Williamson.

Searches over a number of years have been to no avail.

Would be very pleased to hear from anyone who is connected, or who can offer any assistance to trace where these people went to.

Just had another look and the last record I can find of James is his marriage in 1896 in Huddersfield

No death registered either. Him and his wife Elizabeth were both from Whitehaven I wonder why they went to Huddersfield to marry?

Marina, have you got the marriage certificate for him? If so, can you post all the details;

address/wittnesses/ages/fathers/occupations

Hello Ginny,

Thank you for your reply and data provided.

Have all records I can muster to date for this family, including the marriage certificate for James and Elizabeth.

At the time of their marriage, Sept, 1896, Queen's Street Chapel, District of Huddersfield, ( Wesleyan Chapel), Elizabeth, 22, was living at, Portland Street, Huddersfield, occupation cited as, dressmaker. Her father's name was, Joseph William Williamson, a County Court Bailiff.
James was living at High Street, Whitehaven, aged 24. Occupation grocer. Father, Robert Hodgson Hartley, Joiner (retired).
Witnesses for the marriage were, David Hartley (James's older brother) and Emily Smith. Minister was, Albert Clayton.
This will explain why they were married in Huddersfield.

Never managed to trace anything further of, Joseph William Wilkinson, so Elizabeth's mother remains unknown.

Robert Hodgson Hartley died in 1905 and Grace in 1924, both at Whitehaven.

Have contact with a Hartley relative in England, who unfortunately is unaware, what happened to any of these missing brothers.

Note: A, James Hodgson Hartley was born 1900 (Dec) at Burnley. Not the correct parents.

Regards,

Marina

Hello Lindsey,

Thank you for your response and data.

Yes, these are some of the family of interest, census for which I hold.

The disappearance of the 4 brothers is a mystery and unfortunately relatives in England do not know what happened the them, which is a real bother.

Regards,

Marina

Hi, not sure if this is of any help, but in the 1851 census our family had a visitor from Yorkshire (an Engineer) by the name of Robert Henry Hartley (the fourth). Although he is listed as Robert Slatterly (misprint). The family he visited was Rebecca Barnard, aged 41, linen draper, in Norfolk.
