Have been searching for my Charles Hartley's parents & siblings for several years to no avail.
From his obit. when he died in Akaroa Banks Peninsula, New Zealand,
it appears he was at first a sailor sailing to several parts of the world...spoke several languages well including Kanaka & Maori.
He married a widower Martha Holstein, formerly Bomford from East Retford, England, in Okain's Bay in 1861 at which time on his marriage cert it states he was a shoemaker. Later Charles became a farmer and between them he & Martha raised a fine family.

Would love to find more about his travels also please.

Any help whatsoever, would be very much appreciated.

Hi Gael

I can't take the credit for being clever!!! Place of birth was in the title......

However, there's no way of knowing if this is the correct baptism really.

There is a McLaughlan tree on Ancestry with this family - no parents for Charles - user name Tiffanee. Possibly a relative Dianne? It seems she's just as stuck as you unfortunately.

NinjaLady,

I'm way off with Martha's birth. Found in Tiffaney's ramblings that her parents were Henry Bomforth and Caroline Shaw married married 1841, East Retford, Nottingham

Most of it is guesswork, isn't it?

I'm sure there's possibly a family link there though - possibly Henry was a brother/cousin......

I don't know what NZ death certificates are like, but the Aus ones generally have the names of the deceased persons parents don't they? That takes a little of the guesswork out of it! Wish they'd had the same system over here.....

According to the Ancestry tree Henry Bomforth was killed in NZ in 1843 in the Wairau Massacre - apologies but I have no idea of NZ history so don't know what that is about.

Note to self - Google this and don't be so ignorant!!

Martha Bomforth was born in 1841 so the Bomforth's came to NZ when Martha was just a baby.

Just for your interest -here is possibly Henry in 1841 just prior to his marriage

Thankyou for your great lookups NinjaLady.........

Interesting find re Charles Hartley b: 1833

Would also like to learn about above Charles's siblings if possible to see if some of his children's names are the same with the thought that it might help.

By the way (Gael also) Tiffaney & myself are one & the same.

Thankyou very much for the 1841 census re Henry Bomforth ...well done.
Henry above was killed in the Wairau Massacre and his brother lost an arm but lived. For political reasons it is now referred to as "the Wairau Incident."

Am delighted with what you have found re Henry before his marriage.

Appreciate greatly all your help. Thankyou.
