Looking for ancestors of John Hartley, who was born in Cumberland possibly Carlisle in about 1832. According to his marriage certificate (1856 to Ann Brether(ing)ton in Newcastle Upon Tyne), his father, still living, was Charles Hartley who was a gardener. Family legend suggests that the Hartleys were living in the Isle of Man before the Napoleonic wars. They then moved to Cumberland - apparently "to avoid penalties as a result of smuggling activities". John was in Newcastle according to the 1861 and 1871 census. He then moved with his family to a mining village 6 miles east of Newcastle.
