Find Ancestors

Eventhough I have experience in searching for ancestors, this has got me stumped - please could anyone help find a connection between:-
William Harold (or maybe Henry) Hill died 1942 age 37 and Frederick Henry Hill (his father as named on Wm's marriage certificate). Frederick's occupation was Merchant Seaman. A witness on the marriage certificate is E M Hill - so possibly a sibling.
William appears to have been an essential worker in WW2 and died in Portsmouth Hampshire. I have both the death and marriage certificates.

Where did he marry?

I have searched the 1911 census - but cannot find Frederick Hill with a son called William.
Wm Hill married Esther Gallagher in Portsmouth in 1936. His marriage certificate says William Harold Hill
Wm Hill died in 1942 (he was not in the services) His death certificate says William Henry Hill.
I have details for Esther - she was from Sunderland/Northumberland area - therefore I cannot presume Wm Hill was from Portsmouth.

At least I have an avenue to explore - which is better than a brick wall
