Find Ancestors

Can anyone please help me find the father, and siblings (if any) of Thomas William Hill born 08/11/1905?
I have his birth certificate - Registration District of Mansfield, Sub District of Mansfield, County of Nottingham. Mother - Charlotte Hill, Cotton Factory Worker, Residence Stockwell Gate Mansfield. No father's name.
I have his marriage certificate - Registration District of Derby. 01/06/1925. Thomas William Hill, bachelor, aged 20, Painter, 89 Graham Street, no father's name. Married to Hazel Patricia Dakin, spinster, aged 20, 9 Gilman Street, father George Arthur Dakin, Twisthand.
Witnessed by George Henry Hill and Elsie Dakin.
I also have his death certificate - 24/04/1981 in Derby (9 Belvoir Street) retired painter and decorator.
I have gone around and around in circles trying to trace his father. I would be so grateful for any help or information.

Can't find him on 1911 have looked at 3 entries for Thomas Hill born Nottingham 1905 +/-2 years, they all have fathers and different mothers name.

If there is no father named on the birth certificate, then he was illegitimate, and your chance of finding the father is very slim.


The only person who would have known for sure would have been his mother.


The father could be named on the birth certificate only if he attended with the mother and assented to his name being put on there.

Conversely, if a woman said she was married (and she did not have to provide a certificate to prove that!), then the child would be automatically assumed to be the child of the husband ..... whether she/he was or not!



Sometimes you can get a clue ................... a child might be given a second forename that basically "named" the father (eg, using the father's surname as a forename for the child).

Occasionally the vicar would make a note in the margin of the parish registers when the baby was baptized as to the name of the putative father.



One reason why you might not be finding him on the 1911 might be because his mother has married (either his father or someone else), and they are on the census under the "new" surname.

Thanks for the responses so far. Does anyone think it would be worthwhile pursuing a possble link to the witness at the wedding - George Henry Hill - could he possibly be a brother/half brother? Could he be a link between Thomas and Charlotte?
