Hello, I am trying to trace information for Murial Hilton. I know she was born around 1917, possibly in Doncaster. She married Harry Brain in Wakefield in 1938 and they had at least 6 children, all born in the same general area. Any help on either Murial or Harry would be much appreciated!

Are you looking for ancestors OR descendants ?

Their marriage certificate should give you their parents names..to help confirm correct birth certificate....

Looks like he was illegitimate too. Oh dear!

You're going to ahve to buy those two birth certificates.

That will tell you the mothers' names ........... unfortunately it looks as though they are both illegitimate so there will be no father's name on either certificate

But we do need the mother's names to be able to trace back.

The most recent census that is available for searching is the 1911 .... which is before either of them is born .... so we are at a dead end until you can get those mother's names.

Each certificate will cost £7 from the following web site
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

GRO = General Records Office

Click on Ordering Certificates Online

You will have to register .... but it is safe, and free to do so

They will ask if you have the GRO reference number ................... answer YES. It is the set of 2 numbers after the name of the town in the registrations given you above.

Sarah, I perhaps should have explained that I said "oh dear" not because there was anything to be ashamed about, but because it means we can't guess the parents from the 1911 census without a father's name.

So Sylvia is right and there is no other way to go any further back until you have those two certificates.

They both seem pretty "safe" (there are no others to pick, unlike if they were called Mary Smith and John Jones), so do send for them and get back to us when you have them.

thanks for your help, i'll get hold of the certs. and I had a feeling they may have been illegitimate which does not makes things any easier!
