Trying to find Hilton

Hi, I'm trying to find information about my paternal 2x great grandfather John Hilton, born January 1836 in Oldham Lancashire England. He was a miner and was married to Jane (nee Holmes) and they had several children: Rebecca, James, Sarah, Annise, John. Sometime after 1880, he emigrated to America to try and earn more money for his family back home in Oldham. We have no further record of him after this. There is a family story that he had some connection with the name Huntington Hartford, a friend perhaps? and something about a salt or silver mine? I have no idea what part of America he went to. Sometime after he left, his wife Jane was apparently sent some papers to sign and as she couldn't read, merely marked her name with a cross. This is the full extent to the family knowledge about him and I would love to find out more. Hope it strikes a chord with someone. Thanks |
