My Great Grandad William Henry Hughes (1892) was apparently born in pontypool union workhouse in dec 1892, to Mary Ann Hughes (whom it seems spent a great deal of her life from birth there herself) I was just wondering if anybody knows of a way (short of me travelling right across the country) that i can get access to workhouse records about 20 years ago i briefly saw some records on microfisch but am hoping that they may have neen transcribed to computer access and i can just order it online if possible. |

Hi thanks Moonshine, very much appreciate your help im actually looking for proof he is Mary Ann's son, Its very complicated but i will try to explain, i started trying to trace my mothers family the Hughes about 20 years ago but had very little to go on other then basically my grandfathers name and his brothers and sisters but along the road i found out that one of my mothers cousins had the family bible (he is the eldest son of the eldest son) and had paid a heritage company to prepare a report, the report was minimal to say the least and had a lot of phrases like " from information from the family" included but the problem came up that where did the family get the information from in the first place because they dont seem to know where they got it from, the family bible was only started at William Henry so before that is just speculation and guess work althrough the family im sure wouldnt like to hear that........lol, the problem starts when they insist he was born in bristol but was registered at pontypool they then insist his mother was Mary Ann but i cant find the proof as yet, the other thing that makes me suspicious is my mothers cousin remembers his dad having an uncle Bert a Uncle Sam and an Aunt May which in the 1891 and 1901 census indicates that he doesnt actually belong to the family my family thinks he does but to another family with his mother being Mary E Hughes and father a William Hughes but My Family insist its wrong and Mary Ann Hughes from Pontypool Workhouse is his Mother (all very confusing) As you can imagine its driving me up the wall and after 20 years i would just like to know what way to turn..........lol If Anybody has any ideas what so ever i am desperate now any advice or help is very much appreciated. |
