Trying to find Hughes

I am trying to locate ancestors of my grandfather, James Hughes, born c1881, and I believe of Irish origin. He was married to Mary-Ann Williamson, and they had ten children together and lived in Gateshead, (now Tyne and Wear) The only survivor of their children is my mother, Matilda(Tilly) now aged 85 years. James was a bricklayer of some great repute, and apparently would not stand for sub-standard work! He died in 1941 (I think) but I never met him as I was born 1944. Much obliged, Colin Farthing.
