I'm trying to find any extra information on John Jackson, born St Marys, Woolwich, Kent 1803 according to census records. John married a Mary Ann ??

First known child of the above was Ann Jackson 1833, born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Other children were Susannah (1839) and William (1842).

John Jackson was a warder at Coldbath Fields prison (AKA Clerkenwell prison) in London from 1841 to 1861 (census data).

What I cannot find is anything relating to John's parents or possible siblings. I really am stumped!

Would appreciate any leads or advice anyone can offer.

Many regards, Gordon.

Could this be Susannah's birth registration?????? If so it might give her mothers maiden name??

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1838 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JACKSON Susannah Whitechapel 2 449

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The birth in 1839 at St James, Westminister is recorded on family search..... Henry is her father, so not your Susannah.

Thanks Denise.

That 1841 census is certainly of interest, It would place John & Mary in Clerkenwell at the right time to confirm the birthplace of Susannah (c. 1839), recorded as born in Clerkenwell on the 1851 and 1861 censuses.

John Jr and James on the 1841 would also fill in some gaps in timeline.

Ann was born in Chesterfield though, c.1833, this is confirmed on both the 1851 and 1861 censuses.

The problem with the 1841 census is that all the family are recorded as born in Clerkenwell, is it possible this was a oversight by the census taker? The family are quite specific (and consistent) about birthplaces in the later censuses.

I've just looked at that 1841 census image, what would give it a very high likelihood of being the correct record would be John Jackson's (Senior) profession, but I can't fully make out the handwriting.

Does it possibly say Turnkey? I would really appreciate a second opinion.

Many regards, Gordon.

Hi Gordon,

On the 1841 census only Susannah and William were born in the county. It is marked "Y" for those 2 on the original image, the others are marked "N"........... meaning born outside of the county.

I'm really struggling to see what it states as John's profession, however looking at the professions of the people living close by........ they look like professional people and not the usual Ag Labs.

Thanks again Dee.

I completely missed the difference on that census record, thought it was just a scrawl meaning ditto!
